Thousands of people in numerous countries will mark the 10th of October as the seventh World Day Against the Death Penalty by calling for a world without executions.

The first "World Day Against the Death Penalty" took place in 2003. This event was launched by the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty, which gathers international non-governmental organizations (NGOs), bar associations, unions and local governments from all over the world. Established by organizations who participated in the first international Congress against the death penalty (Strasbourg, 2001), the Coalition aims to encourage the establishment of national coalitions, the organization of common initiatives and the coordination of international lobbying efforts to sensitize states that still maintain the death penalty.

As a member of the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty, Amnesty International Hong Kong will be joining hands with Justice and Peace Commission of the H.K. Catholic Diocese to raise awareness on the issue of death penalty.

Amnesty International Hong Kong will be organizing an impersonation of death row prisoners. With a specific focus on Japan, we will be collecting postcards to petition the new administration to stop the execution of mentally ill prisoners.

As citizen of Asia’s World City, world’s future is in our hands and it is up to each and every one of us to join the abolitionist movement.  We strongly encourage you to show your support by volunteering to hand out postcards, or just stop by and pose for a picture with our death row prisoners!
